SEO equals a compromised experience?

31st May 2008

By Anthony Flower - Managing Director

I have heard it said many times that to do true Search Engine Optimisation you need to change so much behind the scenes of a page that it will negatively impact on the site visitor's experiences. Many designers claim that it is necessary to work to find a balance between good SEO and a good web site.

This is not true, it does however take a great deal of time and knowledge to make a good looking and usable web site that is also tailored to suit a search engine's needs.

I think the misconception came from designer's attempts to create compliant code and their decision to do it at the expense of the design. They are half right, compliant code does make a difference in search engine placement, but their error was in their understanding of the compliance rules. Once you have a true understanding of the code you are writing you can create compliant sites that look identical to your old non-compliant ones, you don't need to compromise!

Good Search Engine Optimisation techniques should not be seen as a possible extension of your coding but as an essential part of every design!
